Future Readiness: the new CMO mandate
Five capabilities that separate marketing departments ready for 2030 from those that will fall behind.
The CMO's role has expanded. It now covers brand, growth, data, technology — and increasingly the AI agenda of the organisation. Recent studies by Deloitte and McKinsey show that fewer than 30% of European marketing departments consider themselves ready to operate in an AI-native context.
The five critical capabilities
At MediaWorks we've identified five dimensions that characterise future-ready departments: (1) data fluency — every leader reads dashboards and challenges metrics; (2) applied AI operations — at least one productive use case per quarter; (3) incremental measurement — budget decisions based on incrementality, not just ROAS; (4) creative automation — pipelines producing and testing creative at scale; (5) ethical governance — brand safety, responsible AI, transparency with the consumer.
The talent gap
The challenge is rarely buying technology — it's having a team capable of running it. Winning organisations invest in continuous reskilling programmes (LinkedIn Learning, Coursera for Business, internal training) and create hybrid roles such as Marketing Engineer, AI Prompt Strategist, Measurement Scientist. These profiles didn't exist in 2020.
Organisational structure
Future-ready departments tend to operate as multidisciplinary squads (brand + performance + data + creative) instead of functional silos. Leadership sets the vision and shared platform; the squads operate autonomously against shared metrics.
