Post-cookie measurement and attribution: the new executive standard
Server-side tracking, Conversions API and Media Mix Modeling: how to rebuild a resilient and defensible measurement stack.
The progressive elimination of third-party cookies has forced a deep overhaul of advertising measurement. Brands still relying exclusively on last-click attribution went blind — literally. In 2026, measurement is no longer just the performance team's responsibility; it is an executive discipline that informs budget allocation at board level.
The new measurement stack
The executive standard in 2026 combines three complementary layers. First: server-side tagging via Google Tag Manager Server, Tealium or in-house cloud solutions, to recover signals blocked by the browser. Second: Conversions API integrated across every active platform (Meta CAPI, TikTok Events API, LinkedIn CAPI, Google Enhanced Conversions). Third: probabilistic Media Mix Modelling to attribute incremental value by channel, including offline channels.
Incrementality as a decision metric
Reporting ROAS is no longer enough. Mature teams run incrementality tests — geo-lift, PSA holdouts, ghost bidding — every quarter to validate the true marginal impact of each channel. It's common to discover that channels with high reported ROAS have low incrementality (because they attribute conversions that would have happened anyway).
Open-source MMM: democratisation in motion
Historically, MMM was accessible only to global brands with seven-figure consulting budgets. Open-source tools such as Meridian (Google), Robyn (Meta) and LightweightMMM now enable mid-sized teams to run MMM in-house. The bottleneck has moved from technology to data quality and analytical talent.
Where to start
If CAPI is not yet active across every platform, that's step zero. Then consider an annual MMM pilot, complemented by two incrementality tests per quarter. The 18-month goal should be a measurement triangle: MTA (multi-touch) for operations, MMM for strategic allocation, incrementality for validation.
